In June 2001, the monograph Boris Kudlička, Volume I. appeared on the Slovak book market. This coffee-table book captures
the work of the Slovak stage designer who works on the most prestigious European and world stages and cooperates with
such greats as Placido Domingo, Roman Polanski, Sir Simon Rattle and Sophia Loren as well as with leading opera directors
Mariusz Trelinski, Keith Warner, Dale Duesing and others. His activities span not only the world of opera - he has created
scenes for several films and devotes time to the installations of large exhibitions.
“All the time I strive to contradict myself. I am not erasing my footprints but gaining new experience, seeking new ways
of expressing myself, a new style”, says Kudlička, known for his ceaseless desire for knowledge.
Currently he is the General Commissioner of the World Exhibition of Stage Design - PQ 2011, opening to public in mid-June
in Veltržný Palác in Prague. Kudlička´s key exhibit is called Light and Sound.
The monograph Volume I. contains photographs representing the most important opera productions on different world
stages, sketches, models and exhibitions; these are supplemented by texts and a complete list of productions in Slovak,
English and Polish.
The art directors Andrej Ďurík, Pavol Choma and Linda Kuruc in their graphic design of the book followed the spirit
of the creative language of Boris Kudlička, characterized by purity of style, minimalism, compositional ingenuity, material
and lighting imagination and daring constructions.
The book Volume I. records a key stretch in the artistic career of a scenographer that belongs to that category of artists
shaping the trends in current European and world opera.
